freshman/sophomore wildflower belles formal | temple, tx event DJ

It is one of the greatest honors for me to DJ by referral. In February I led the party for the Sophomore Belles of the Wildflower Guild in Strasburger Hall at the Cultural Activities Center (http://www.cacarts.org/) in Temple, Texas. This past month I was invited back for the freshmen dance. They both hit close to home because growing up, I was invited to this same party by an old friend. Now getting to go back and try to remedy what our DJ back in the day squelched was truly a pleasure.

We’ll start with the sophomores. Lovely group of young people (haha I said young people).  After allowing them the chance to take pictures and mingle and snack and mingle and take pictures, we got the party started. I was informed that the kids had learned to two-step, waltz, and line-dance, but I was not informed that they were actually good at them. To my great wonder, the kids took to the floor with breathless distinction. Not completely breathless, that would be bad, but distinction nonetheless. Moving on… After the kids sufficiently showed their skills, no doubt learned from many the Cotillion, we got down with our bad selves. I taught a few dances and learned a few moves from the more confident of the bunch. I do hope this night was at least as fun for the kids as it was for Bailey and I.

The freshmen were a couple months later. Although a little more hesitant to boogie woogie in front of their friends/parents/imaginary onlookers, they eventually warmed up to the conundrum that is dancing. It is an odd thing to DJ a dance with kids that will 2-step the night away, but draw a blank when Rihanna comes on. It just isn’t everyday that a bunch of kids know how to dance formally but are very hesitant to dance informally. They got the picture after Bailey and I interpretive danced a couple of songs. (Oh yeah we did!) I also showed them a few line dances that they’d never tried along with the other favorites. I say “favorites” because I was told they really enjoy them. Turned out it was true.

Overall, I hope the kids had a good night. It might not have been as bumpy and grindy as a typically dance but we all had a sweet biscuit of a time.
