Clay and Theran | San Marcos Wedding DJ

My first wedding of the season (this was back in May). Stupendous.  We met with Clay and Theron for lunch in April when we were down in San Marcos visiting friends.  I was scheduled to DJ the BYX island party at Texas State but rain stopped the whole gig.  Moving on.  Clay and Theron had booked my most popular date of 2010 almost a year and a half ago.  They had seen me at Michael and Delissa’s wedding back in 2008.

I brought my little brother Andrew along for this wedding.  This was his first time to tag along with me.  Definitely not the last time.

We hiked all the equipment up to the 9th floor at the JC kellum building on the Texas State Campus in San Marcos.  Beautiful view of the campus in a well decorated room.  I had enough time to take in the scenery before the party began.  The guests arrived and as Mr. and Mrs. Clay Smallwood blessed our presence at the reception for the first time.

Appetizers aside, the dances begin.  I love pretty songs. (Ask me what I think is pretty sometime I dare ya.)  Clay gave me the special honor of singing his first dance with his mom.  My record with moms is pretty good so far and this one was a refreshing challenge: The Choir Director.  Dun dun DAH!  My specialty.  My years as a choir kid served me well tonight as they flawlessly exited the dance floor to cut the cake.  We made some toast (name that movie!) then danced the day away.  It was a short evening but with efficient use of time it ended up being perfect for the crowd.  The groom made some choice requests, my favorite being “I will survive” for the guests to electric slide to.  Cheesy?  Definitely.  Fun?  No doubt.  What a way to start out the summer.

freshman/sophomore wildflower belles formal | temple, tx event DJ

It is one of the greatest honors for me to DJ by referral. In February I led the party for the Sophomore Belles of the Wildflower Guild in Strasburger Hall at the Cultural Activities Center (http://www.cacarts.org/) in Temple, Texas. This past month I was invited back for the freshmen dance. They both hit close to home because growing up, I was invited to this same party by an old friend. Now getting to go back and try to remedy what our DJ back in the day squelched was truly a pleasure.

We’ll start with the sophomores. Lovely group of young people (haha I said young people).  After allowing them the chance to take pictures and mingle and snack and mingle and take pictures, we got the party started. I was informed that the kids had learned to two-step, waltz, and line-dance, but I was not informed that they were actually good at them. To my great wonder, the kids took to the floor with breathless distinction. Not completely breathless, that would be bad, but distinction nonetheless. Moving on… After the kids sufficiently showed their skills, no doubt learned from many the Cotillion, we got down with our bad selves. I taught a few dances and learned a few moves from the more confident of the bunch. I do hope this night was at least as fun for the kids as it was for Bailey and I.

The freshmen were a couple months later. Although a little more hesitant to boogie woogie in front of their friends/parents/imaginary onlookers, they eventually warmed up to the conundrum that is dancing. It is an odd thing to DJ a dance with kids that will 2-step the night away, but draw a blank when Rihanna comes on. It just isn’t everyday that a bunch of kids know how to dance formally but are very hesitant to dance informally. They got the picture after Bailey and I interpretive danced a couple of songs. (Oh yeah we did!) I also showed them a few line dances that they’d never tried along with the other favorites. I say “favorites” because I was told they really enjoy them. Turned out it was true.

Overall, I hope the kids had a good night. It might not have been as bumpy and grindy as a typically dance but we all had a sweet biscuit of a time.

Sweetheart Dance | Dallas event DJ

A couple of weekends ago we had the priveledge of DJing a Daddy/Daughter dance. It was most definitely an extravaganza of awesome.  Saturday afternoon we headed to the Atrium  in Garland.  A beautiful venue that holds up to 300 if you want a good dance floor.  But this was no wedding.   This was two dances in one night that were very different from most of the things I have done but similar in their own way.  This night was for the fathers and daughters.  From 5:00 to 7:00pm Dads of all ages came in with their 4 to 7 year old little girls.  The Disney songs were pumping and soon after the fried chicken was devoured the dance floor was full of troopers with their little princesses.  Awesomeness.

That dance ended promptly at 7 and the staff and volunteers cleared the room for round two.   At 7:30 dads filed in with their 7-10 year old bigger girls for a second blast of spectacular.  This group was far more assertive, (for lack of a better word), and quickly got into the groove of requesting songs.  Since the girls weren’t allowed on stage, onslaught after onslaught was met by my lovely and courageous assistant, Bailey.  She went back and forth on the stage from each set of stairs holding off the flurry of mouthfire from those Disney channel loving little/bigger girls.

The night was not just full of Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus…oh no.  Although the dads were expecting to be blasted with pre-teen rhapsodies, I hit ‘em with my best shots of My Girl and a few others.  It was about half/half between girly/man stuff.  I ended the night by singing Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder.   It really was satisfying seeing all of the dads sing along with some of the music I chose.

At any dance that I am a part of, I prefer to appease/satisfy the musical cravings of all attending.  And as The Temptations and Selena Gomez joined forces for probably the first time ever, this night was no doubt a great success.
